Hello

I've lived here since 1988

For nearly four decades, I've walked and explored these moors in sunshine, fog, storms and snow. I've watched the light change across Dartmoor at dawn, cycled through Exmoor lanes in winter, and photographed weather rolling in across Bodmin.

3moors is what I've built from all of that. Not a marketing project or a directory scraped together from elsewhere. A real guide, rooted in lived experience, built for people who actually care about these places.

Walking, observing, photographing

It began with walking. Simple curiosity about what lay beyond the next ridge, which paths actually went where, what the weather was doing and how it shaped the day. I'd wake early, grab a camera, and explore. I still do.

Over the years that built into something deeper. I watched fog swallow a tor in minutes. I cycled through winter ice on the lanes around Tavistock. I've seen wild weather roll across the moors from miles away. I've found hidden valleys, photographed deer at dawn, and learned how the landscape changes not just through the seasons but year to year, decade to decade.

That knowledge, real, lived, accumulated from boots on the ground, is what 3moors is built from. Not marketing copy. Not generalized travel advice. The kind of understanding that only comes from actually living somewhere and paying close attention.

The weather station, and why it matters

For years, I ran a live weather station here in Tavistock. People in the village and across the moors used it. They'd check real-time temperatures before heading out for a walk. They'd see if rain was coming, or when the wind had dropped enough to explore. It wasn't fancy — just honest, immediate data from someone who lived here.

That work led to unexpected moments. ITV filming in the garden live... scary!. Sharing live updates when significant weather was moving across the region. What I learned from all of that was simple: people want the real story about what's happening outside, right now, from someone they can trust.

Weather sits at the heart of understanding these moors. It shapes when walks are passable. It determines what you'll see in nature. It changes which routes feel safe or adventurous. That's why weather conditions, seasonal insights, and real local observation matter so much in everything 3moors does.

To help you actually know these moors

I built 3moors because visitors and locals deserve better than generic travel guides. They deserve real information from someone who knows the landscape, what walks are actually worth your time, which places hold hidden stories, when conditions are safe, what wildlife you might see.

This isn't a business trying to monetize every page view. It's a resource built from decades of walking, observing and caring about these places. Every walk has been walked. Every place description comes from real experience. Every piece of advice is rooted in actual knowledge, not marketing.

Standards We Keep

  • Verified Routes (these are verified by us as our walked experience), are walked and published or updated in the walks we show
  • No sponsored listings. No affiliate links. No hidden agendas.
  • Walk grades reflect real conditions, not optimistic marketing.
  • Where AI helps with drafting, everything is manually reviewed and edited by someone who knows the landscape.
  • Outdated routes are flagged or removed, not left to quietly mislead.
  • Visitor feedback shapes our updates. We listen and act.

If you love these moors

If you're someone who actually explores Dartmoor, Exmoor or Bodmin Moor, or you want to, I hope 3moors helps you discover something new. Walks you'd never found. Places with stories worth knowing. Wildlife you didn't know was there.

These moors deserve care, attention, and respect. So does the time you spend exploring them. I've built 3moors from that belief, and I keep working on it for that reason. I hope it serves you well.
