Each moor has a distinct character. Understanding the differences helps you pick the right route for your experience, fitness and the conditions on the day.
Dartmoor
The largest and most varied of the three moors. Expect exposed high plateau, navigation challenges, military range restrictions in the north, and tors that reward the effort to reach them. Weather arrives fast from the Atlantic — carry map and compass on any route above 400m.
Dartmoor walks →Exmoor
Steeper and more intimate than Dartmoor, with deep wooded combes dropping to the sea. The coastal path requires more height gain and loss than it looks on the map. Red deer are common, particularly in autumn. Valley floors can be very boggy in winter.
Exmoor coastal walks →Bodmin Moor
Quieter and more remote-feeling than the other two moors. The archaeology is extraordinary — the highest density of Bronze Age monuments in the South West. Navigation on the open plateau is harder than it looks because of fewer obvious landmarks. Brown Willy and Rough Tor give proper summit experiences.
