About this walk
Martinsell rises quietly, but once you’re up there, it feels anything but small.
Set on the edge of the downs, Martinsell Hillfort is the highest point in the Vale of Pewsey, and the climb rewards you quickly with wide, open views and a strong sense of position in the landscape.
The route is simple and direct. You leave the lower fields behind and climb steadily onto the chalk ridge, where the ground opens out and the sky suddenly feels much bigger. It’s a short ascent, but it gives that satisfying shift from enclosed to exposed that makes a walk feel complete.
At the summit, the remains of the hillfort form a broad, open crown. The earthworks are subtle but unmistakable, shaping the ground beneath your feet and hinting at the defensive importance of this high point thousands of years ago.
From here, the views stretch across the Vale of Pewsey and beyond, rolling farmland, distant ridges, and a landscape that feels both worked and ancient at the same time.
This is a compact walk with real presence, quick to do, but one that leaves an impression.
Standing ground
Hillforts like Martinsell weren’t built by accident. Stand on the summit and you’ll feel it immediately, this is a place chosen for its view, its control, and its presence in the landscape.

Landscape & History
Martinsell Hillfort dates back to the Iron Age and occupies a commanding position overlooking the surrounding landscape.
Like many hillforts, its strength lies in visibility and control — from here, movement across the vale would have been easily monitored. The earthworks, though worn, still define the summit and give a clear sense of enclosure.
The surrounding downs are classic Wiltshire chalk country — smooth, open, and shaped by centuries of grazing and farming.
