Golitha Falls and Draynes Wood Extended Loop
River, waterfall, ancient oak woodland and a quieter side of Bodmin Moor
Golitha Falls, Bodmin Moor, Cornwall · Bodmin Moor
Quick summary
A softer 10,000 step option on the Bodmin Moor edge — river path, waterfall, ancient oak woodland and the Draynes Wood extended loop. Around 9,500–11,000 steps. Excellent year-round and particularly good in autumn and winter.
Why this walk works for 10,000 steps
Woodland terrain means more frequent footstep adjustments over roots and varied ground, which increases step count relative to distance. The extended Draynes Wood loop adds enough extra mileage to push most walkers close to 10,000 steps.
Route summary
- 1From the car park, follow the river path downstream to Golitha Falls — a series of cascades through the wooded gorge.
- 2Continue through the ancient oak woodland of Draynes Wood.
- 3Loop south and east through the wider woodland network.
- 4Return north along the opposite bank to the car park.
Terrain and difficulty
Woodland paths with roots, some narrow sections and occasional mud. No significant hills. Very accessible and well-signed. Can be slippery on wet roots.
Best time to walk
Autumn for colour and the falls in spate. Spring for bluebells and birdsong. All year round — even in summer the woodland canopy keeps it cool.
Facilities nearby
No café at the site. Nearest facilities at Liskeard (5 miles). Jamaica Inn at Bolventor is accessible by car.
Safety & access
Woodland paths can be slippery after rain — take care on root sections. The river path beside the falls is not fenced in places. Dogs should be on leads near the waterfall.
Distances and step counts are approximate and vary by stride length, terrain and device. Moorland and coastal routes can feel harder than the numbers suggest. Always check weather, daylight and access conditions before setting out.
