Unlike many coastal villages, Clovelly is largely traffic-free beyond the upper visitor area. The steep cobbled descent to the harbour is inaccessible to coaches, caravans and motorhomes, and even small service vehicles operate under strict limitations. Visitors in larger vehicles should treat Clovelly as a designated visitor parking destination only.

Recommended approach

Approach using the official signed visitor route only. Do not attempt to follow minor coastal lanes or unofficial sat nav shortcuts around Clovelly. All visitors should park in the upper visitor parking area and continue on foot into the village.

Roads to avoid

Avoid minor cliffside lanes, narrow agricultural approaches, unsigned local shortcuts, and attempting lower village access. Roads around Clovelly can narrow rapidly and may include steep hedge-lined sections unsuitable for larger vehicles.

Sat nav warning

Sat nav systems may incorrectly suggest narrow local lanes or unsuitable coastal shortcuts around Clovelly. Always prioritise official brown tourist signage, local vehicle restrictions and visitor parking guidance over sat nav routing.

Parking, turning & drop-off

Parking

Clovelly benefits from a substantial visitor parking area above the village, which is the intended arrival point for all visitors. Parking pressure still increases significantly during summer holidays, sunny weekends, event days and school breaks.

Turning points

Turning within the historic village itself is not possible for public vehicles. Larger vehicles should remain entirely within designated parking and arrival areas.

Drop-off points

Coach and minibus drop-offs should use official visitor entrance arrangements where permitted. Do not attempt lower village drop-off access.

Seasonal access notes

Summer congestionHigh

Although Clovelly has better managed parking than many harbour villages, approach roads and visitor entrances can still become heavily congested during peak season. Arrive early during July and August, bank holidays and warm weekends. Wet winter conditions can also make approach roads slippery and more difficult for towing vehicles.

Local knowledge

Clovelly was never designed for modern traffic. The village's famous steep cobbled street historically relied on donkeys and sledges rather than wheeled transport. Today, this creates one of the most distinctive vehicle restriction environments anywhere in the South West. Visitors should embrace Clovelly as a walking destination rather than attempting close vehicle access.

For international visitors

Visitors unfamiliar with older British coastal villages may be surprised how restrictive access becomes near Clovelly. Roads may narrow sharply between hedges, lack reversing space, include steep blind gradients, and become unsuitable very quickly for larger vehicles. The village itself is effectively pedestrian-only beyond the upper access areas.
