Best approach

Approach via the A38 to the A390, then follow the B3359 signed toward Polperro. Use the main village car parks above the historic centre and walk down to the harbour. Do not attempt to drive into the lower village or harbour area.

Sat nav systems regularly route vehicles via minor lanes and unsuitable tracks around Polperro. Always follow local road signage and official restrictions over sat nav directions. If a suggested route looks narrow on a map, it almost certainly is.

Restrictions

Width: Multiple narrow pinch-points in the village centre. Effectively single-track with no passing places in many streets.

Height: No low bridges on main approach. Narrow streets severely limit tall vehicle manoeuvrability.

Weight: No specific weight signs, but steep gradients and tight turns make heavy vehicles impractical and hazardous.

Polperro is one of Cornwall's most beautiful and most restricted harbour villages — historic, heavily visited in summer, and extremely awkward for anything larger than a small car. The streets were built for fishing carts and pedestrians centuries before motor vehicles existed. The lower village has no viable turning for any large vehicle once committed downhill.

Recommended approach

Approach via the A38 to the A390, then follow the B3359 signed toward Polperro. Use the main village car parks above the historic centre and walk down to the harbour. Do not attempt to drive into the lower village or harbour area.

Roads to avoid

Do not attempt to drive into the lower village or harbour area in coaches, caravans, large motorhomes, large campervans, or oversized SUVs. There is no viable turning or escape route once committed downhill. Avoid minor lanes via Pelynt or Lansallos — they are extremely narrow and unsuitable for larger vehicles. Do not follow sat nav shortcuts via coastal tracks.

Sat nav warning

Sat nav systems regularly route vehicles via minor lanes and unsuitable tracks around Polperro. Always follow local road signage and official restrictions over sat nav directions. If a suggested route looks narrow on a map, it almost certainly is.

Parking, turning & drop-off

Parking

Use the main village car parks above the historic centre (pay & display). This is the correct approach for all vehicle types — walk down to the harbour from here (5–10 minutes). Do not attempt to find parking in the lower village.

Turning points

No viable turning once in the lower village. All large vehicles must turn before entering the village centre. The main car park area above the village is the practical limit for any vehicle larger than a small car.

Drop-off points

Very limited drop-off near the village entrance only. No dedicated coach drop-off point. Coaches should not enter the village and must arrange drop-off well before the historic centre.

Seasonal access notes

Summer congestionExtreme in summer

July and August bring extreme pedestrian and vehicle pressure. The village becomes very difficult for any vehicle larger than a small car during peak hours. Best to arrive before 9am or after 6pm. October to March is significantly easier.

Possible temporary traffic management during peak summer periods. Always check local signage on arrival.

Local knowledge

Polperro is a working fishing village with a fragile historic core that has lived with visitor vehicle pressure for decades. The road system cannot be changed — it simply has no space. The car parks above the village exist precisely to keep vehicles out of the lower streets. Park here and walk in — this is the only sensible approach. Follow all signed restrictions, even if they seem unnecessary. Be patient with pedestrians in narrow streets — they have right of way.

For international visitors

If you are visiting from countries with wider roads and different driving norms, Polperro may be a significant challenge. UK country lanes are frequently single-track with passing places. Harbour villages like Polperro were built centuries before the motor car existed. Park in the main car park outside the village and walk in — this is the option chosen by many experienced UK drivers too.

Road issues at a glance

Narrow lanesSteep gradientsTight bendsWidth restrictionsLimited turningSeasonal congestionSat nav risk

Village centre streets are extremely narrow — built for fishing carts, not modern vehicles. Stone buildings line both sides with no tolerance for wide vehicles.

Very steep descent to the harbour. Impossible to reverse back up safely in a large vehicle if you become committed.

Multiple sharp bends on both approaches to the village and throughout the lower streets.

No viable turning space once committed downhill into the lower village. Large vehicles must not enter.

July and August bring extreme pedestrian and vehicle pressure. The narrow streets simply cannot accommodate summer visitor volumes alongside traffic.

Sat nav regularly routes vehicles via minor lanes and unsuitable tracks around Polperro. Always follow local signage over sat nav.

Vehicle-specific notes

Coach

Coaches must not enter the village centre. There is no coach parking or turning in the lower village. The approach roads are not suitable for full-size coaches beyond the main car park area. Arrange passenger drop-off at the village entrance and park remotely.

Motorhome

Large motorhomes should not attempt the lower village under any circumstances. Park in the main car parks above the village. Small motorhomes (under 6m) can reach the car parks. Arrive early in peak season — car parks fill quickly in summer.

Campervan

Small campervans can reach the main car parks above the village and this is the recommended approach. Do not attempt the lower village streets in any campervan. Arrive before 9am in July and August.

Caravan

Caravans should not approach Polperro in tow. There is no suitable parking, turning or unhitching space. Detach and leave the caravan at a suitable site before visiting Polperro.

Approach by direction

From north

Take A38 south toward Liskeard, then follow A390 and B3359 west toward Polperro. Recommended approach for all vehicle types.

From south

Approach via coastal lanes is not recommended for large vehicles. Use A390 and B3359 from the north instead.

From east

From Plymouth: A38 west toward Liskeard, then A390 and B3359. Standard recommended route.

From west

From Fowey or Lostwithiel: B3359 east. Road narrows approaching the village — park before the historic centre.
