About this walk
There’s something quietly powerful about walking around Badbury Rings.
At first glance, it feels like an easy woodland stroll, wide paths, gentle gradients, nothing demanding. But as you start to follow the circular earthworks, you realise you’re not just walking around the landscape… you’re walking through layers of history.
The rings themselves are the remains of an Iron Age hillfort, built over 2,000 years ago. The banks rise and fall in smooth curves, still clearly shaping the hilltop. As you walk them, you get a real sense of how this place once functioned, a defended settlement with commanding views over the surrounding land.
The route is simple but satisfying. You move between open grassy sections and shaded woodland, with the path naturally guiding you around the circular form of the fort. It’s easy to follow, making it ideal for families or anyone wanting a shorter, more relaxed walk.
What makes this one special isn’t distance or difficulty, it’s the atmosphere. It’s calm, spacious, and just a little bit timeless. On a quiet day, especially early morning or late afternoon, it’s easy to imagine what this place might have felt like thousands of years ago.

Landscape & History
Badbury Rings is one of the best-preserved Iron Age hillforts in southern England. Its triple-ringed earthworks once formed a strong defensive position, overlooking key routes through the area.
The location wasn’t chosen by chance. From the top, the views stretch across the Dorset countryside, giving a clear strategic advantage. Today, those same views give walkers a sense of space and openness, even within the surrounding woodland.
Over time, the site has softened. The once-sharp defences are now smooth grassy banks, and woodland has grown around the edges, giving the walk a peaceful, almost park-like feel. But the shape of the fort is still unmistakable, a reminder of just how important this place once was.

There’s a slightly wild edge to Ebbor Gorge. Not dramatic like a mountain, not open like the moors — but enclosed, steep, and just unpredictable enough to feel like an adventure. It’s one of those walks where you don’t just “complete a route”… you wander it.

Knowlton Church & Earthworks
A short walk to one of Dorset’s most atmospheric historic sites, where a ruined church stands inside ancient earthworks.
