What happened here
Tavistock Abbey once dominated the town and surrounding region, shaping religion, trade and local life for centuries. Today its surviving remains hint at its former scale and power.
Tavistock Abbey was founded in the 10th century and grew into one of Devon’s richest Benedictine monasteries.
The abbey controlled large estates and influenced religion, education, trade and local government. Tavistock itself grew around its power and prosperity.
The abbey was dissolved under Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century. Much of the complex was dismantled or reused.
Today the surviving remains, including parts of walls, gateways and structures, reveal the scale of what once stood here.
The abbey’s influence still shapes Tavistock’s townscape and heritage.
