About this walk
Starting at the Ballowall Barrow lay-by, this walk quickly places you on the edge of something much older than the surrounding landscape might first suggest. The barrow itself is the centrepiece, a rare and complex prehistoric burial site set just back from the cliff edge. It is an unusual place, both in structure and in setting, and it anchors the whole walk. From here, the route opens out onto the mining coast. The land feels exposed, shaped by wind and weather, with rough ground underfoot and the Atlantic stretching away beyond the cliffs. There is a sense of space, but also a sense of history layered into the ground. It is not a long walk, but it carries a strong feeling of place, where ancient ritual, industrial past, and natural landscape all meet.

Landscape & History
Ballowall Barrow is one of the most complex prehistoric burial monuments in Cornwall, combining chambered tomb features with later structural additions. Its position on the edge of the mining coast adds another layer of history. The surrounding land carries traces of Cornwall's industrial past, with subtle remains of mining activity woven into the landscape. The result is a place where very different periods sit close together, giving the walk a depth that goes beyond its short distance.
