About this walk
This short circuit is Dartmoor stripped back to its essentials: open grass, granite tors and that sense of space you only get on the western moor. You climb steadily to Great Mis Tor for a broad panorama, traverse to the less-visited Roos Tor, then return across rough pasture and moorland track back to Pork Hill.
The Experience
Big-sky Dartmoor in a compact loop. Start from Pork Hill, climb onto open moor for Great Mis Tor’s wide views, then cross to quieter Roos Tor before drifting back over rough grass and faint tracks. Exposed, breezy and brilliant in clear weather; in mist it needs careful navigation.

1) Start at Pork Hill car park and head south-west on moorland track/grass toward Great Mis Tor.
Landscape & History
Great Mis Tor and Roos Tor sit on Dartmoor’s western flank, where open grazing land, disused mining remains and far-reaching granite ridges define the landscape. This is classic big-sky moorland with little shelter and a strong sense of space throughout.
Safety & Conditions
Weather
This is a very exposed walk with almost no shelter. Wind and low cloud can make the ground feel harsher than the mileage suggests.
Navigation
Simple on a fine day, but the open grassland between the tors can become vague in mist. Carry a map and compass and take a clear bearing if visibility closes in.
Livestock & Wildlife
Ponies, sheep and cattle may all be encountered. Keep dogs close and avoid letting them run ahead across grazing ground.
Footwear
Boots or trail shoes with good grip are recommended, especially after rain when the grass and granite become slippery.
Variations
A shorter outing can visit Great Mis Tor only before returning to Pork Hill. Stronger walkers can add Cox Tor, Pew Tor or Windy Post to make a broader western-moor circuit.
Access & Parking
A fine compact walk when you want open country and quick rewards. The route is easy to shorten if the weather turns, but there is little shelter once you leave the car park.
