About this walk

Jamaica Inn sits high on Bodmin Moor, exposed to wind, weather — and imagination. This walk steps away from the busy A30 into a quieter world of open ground and long horizons. The route leads out to Dozmary Pool, a still, brooding stretch of water often linked with Arthurian legend. But the real story here is how fiction reshaped fact. Jamaica Inn was a coaching stop — a practical hub for travellers, horses and goods. Smuggling certainly happened along the Cornish coast, but the dramatic tales we associate with this place owe as much to Daphne du Maurier's novel as to history itself. Out on the moor, with the wind moving across the grass and the sky stretching wide, it's easy to see how those stories took hold.

Route Summary

Start at Jamaica Inn (Bolventor). Follow quiet lanes and tracks towards Dozmary Pool. Loop around the pool edge (conditions permitting). Pick up moorland track heading back towards the inn. Return for food, drink, or a browse inside.

Landscape & History

Jamaica Inn has been serving travellers since the eighteenth century, sitting astride what was once the main route across Bodmin Moor. It was a coaching stop — a practical place for horses, riders and goods moving between coasts.

Smuggling was certainly real in Cornwall. The county's coastline, with its coves, caves and remote landing spots, made it ideal for landing brandy, silk and tea away from excise men. But the romanticised version — wrecker gangs, inn-based conspiracies, moonlit chases — owes far more to Daphne du Maurier's 1936 novel than to recorded history. Du Maurier stayed at the inn and was captivated by its atmosphere. The story she wrote transformed a working coaching house into a literary landmark.

Dozmary Pool, the destination of this walk, carries its own legends. Local tradition holds it as the lake into which Sir Bedivere cast Excalibur after Arthur fell at Camlann. Whether or not you believe it, the pool has a genuine quality of stillness — brooding, treeless, open to the sky — that makes the story feel plausible.

Photography: Late afternoon into blue hour works well. Mist and low light create strong mood shots. Reflections at Dozmary Pool are worth waiting for.

Safety & Conditions

Weather

Moorland is fully exposed — weather can change quickly. Mist can roll in fast; carry navigation. Wind can be strong on open ground.

Navigation

Mixed waymarking — GPX or OS mapping strongly recommended, especially near Dozmary Pool and on open moorland sections.

Livestock & Wildlife

Keep dogs under control near livestock. Uneven ground in places on open moor.

Footwear

Waterproof footwear recommended — ground can be boggy after rain.

Variations

Extend via Colliford Lake shoreline (+3 km approx). Short option: loop near the inn only (1–2 miles). Good as a shorter storytelling loop for filming or photography.

Access & Parking

Start and finish at Jamaica Inn, Bolventor, close to the A30. Parking at the inn (check customer policy). Food, drink and toilets available at the inn.
