About this walk
This walk shows a different side of Cornwall.
Instead of cliffs and sea views, you’re in a quieter, greener landscape, a wooded valley where the county’s mining past sits just beneath the surface. The route centres around Poldark Mine, one of the few places where you can still see how Cornwall’s industrial history actually worked on the ground.
The paths lead you through a mix of woodland, old tracks, and valley routes that would once have been busy with workers, carts, and machinery. Today, it’s peaceful — but the signs are still there if you look closely: old stonework, spoil heaps, and the subtle scars of mining activity.
There’s a strong sense of place here. The valley feels enclosed, almost hidden, and that suits the story. Cornwall’s mining wasn’t just about the dramatic engine houses on the coast, much of it happened inland, in places like this, where the work was constant and the landscape slowly reshaped over time.
It’s an easy-going walk physically, but one that rewards curiosity. Take your time, look around, and the history reveals itself.
A different Cornwall
Most visitors picture Cornwall as cliffs and coast, but inland valleys like this tell an equally important story. It’s a softer landscape, but one shaped by hard work and industry.

Landscape & History
Cornwall’s mining industry was once one of the most important in the world, particularly for tin and copper. While coastal engine houses often get the attention, inland sites like Poldark Mine were just as vital.
Poldark Mine itself is based on Wheal Roots, a genuine historic mine that has been preserved and opened to the public. It gives a rare glimpse into underground workings, adding depth to what you see above ground on the walk.
The surrounding valley landscape has been shaped by centuries of extraction, yet nature has reclaimed much of it, creating a quieter, greener setting.
