Illustrative profileRoute Summary
Start from a nearby lane or moorland parking area and follow paths across fields and open moorland towards the Teign valley and Scorhill. Explore the stone circle and surrounding moor before looping back. Optional detours can include nearby standing stones or river paths.
Landscape & History
Scorhill feels powerful. Unlike some smaller circles, these stones stand tall and scattered, giving the site a raw, ancient presence. It is one of Dartmoor's finest prehistoric sites.
Safety & Conditions
Weather
Highly exposed to weather. Wind, rain, and cold are common even in summer. No shelter. Check forecast before visiting.
Navigation
Minimal waymarking. Use map and compass or GPS. Paths can be wet and boggy.
Livestock & Wildlife
Livestock, ponies or sheep may be present on parts of the route. Keep dogs under close control and give animals plenty of room.
Footwear
Wear proper walking shoes or boots with grip. Trainers are only comfortable here in the driest and easiest conditions.
Variations
Can be trimmed in poor conditions, but the full route is the better option if visibility is decent and the ground is dry enough.
Access & Parking
Take care in poor weather. Mist, exposed conditions and wet ground near streams can make navigation and footing harder. Carry a map or GPS.
