About this walk
This is a classic South Devon seaside walk with a proper working-harbour edge. Starting around Teignmouth Back Beach, the route blends old-fashioned promenade charm with the sights and sounds of a busy estuary town, fishing boats rocking on their moorings, ferries crossing the water, gulls overhead, and sea walls battered by the tide. Wide views open across the Teign Estuary toward Shaldon and out to sea, giving the walk a constantly changing backdrop.
Underfoot it’s mostly easy, with promenades, harbour paths and pavements, making it ideal for families, casual walkers and anyone wanting fresh sea air without a big climb. There are plenty of places to stop, cafés, pubs, fish and chip shops, or simply a bench with a view. On stormy days, waves can crash dramatically against the sea front and make the whole place feel wild and alive; on calm evenings, with the sun dropping over the estuary, it becomes one of the easiest and most rewarding waterfront strolls in South Devon.

Elevation Profile
Illustrative profileRoute Summary
This circular-style route begins at Teignmouth Back Beach and follows the waterfront through the harbour and promenade, taking in estuary views and the bustle of the working port. Depending on your chosen variation, it may include stretches of the coast path, sea-front pavements, and occasional short climbs onto higher ground for wider views across the bay.
The return leg can loop back via quieter residential lanes, cliff-top sections, or inland roads, creating a varied walk that mixes harbour life, sea views and a little local character away from the crowds. Navigation is straightforward, and the route can easily be shortened for families or extended into Shaldon using the passenger ferry.
Landscape & History
Teignmouth has long been shaped by the sea. It grew as an important estuary port, with trade, fishing and ship movement driving the town’s fortunes for centuries. Timber, clay and other cargoes once passed through here in significant volumes, and while the town is now a popular holiday destination, that working-waterfront character remains part of its identity.
The broad estuary of the River Teign creates ever-changing views with shifting tides, mudflats and moored boats, while the open sea brings drama in bad weather and calm beauty in summer. Across the water, Shaldon offers a quieter contrast, while the sea wall and promenade speak to Teignmouth’s Victorian era as a fashionable resort. Today, this walk combines all of those layers, maritime industry, Victorian leisure and classic Devon coastal scenery, into one easy and enjoyable route.
Safety & Conditions
Weather
Strong winds and heavy rain are the main concerns here, especially along the exposed seafront, harbour walls and any higher coast-path sections. In stormy weather, waves can break over sea walls and make promenades slippery or unsafe. Check tide and weather conditions before setting out.
Navigation
Navigation is generally straightforward, following promenades, harbour paths and town streets. Some route variations using older lanes, steps or coast-path junctions may need a little extra attention, particularly if exploring beyond the main waterfront.
Livestock & Wildlife
Livestock are not usually an issue on the main route. If you extend onto cliff paths or into nearby fields, grazing animals may occasionally be present, so keep dogs under close control.
Footwear
Comfortable walking shoes or trainers are fine in dry conditions, as much of the route is paved or well surfaced. Waterproof footwear with decent grip is useful after rain, particularly on slippery steps, harbour ramps or rougher coast-path sections.
Variations
This walk is easy to shorten into a simple seafront and harbour stroll, perfect for families or anyone wanting a relaxed wander around Teignmouth Back Beach and the promenade.
For a longer outing, you can extend the route along the South West Coast Path, climb toward higher viewpoints above the town, or take the passenger ferry across to Shaldon and explore the opposite side of the estuary before returning. There are plenty of options to tailor the walk to your time and energy.
Access & Parking
Access is generally straightforward, with much of the route using promenades, pavements and surfaced harbour paths. However, some variations may include uneven surfaces, kerbs, ramps, steps or short steeper climbs, so it is not fully step-free throughout.
Parking is available in several public car parks around the seafront and town, including near the Back Beach, promenade and harbour areas. Arrive early during summer or sunny weekends, as spaces can fill quickly. Public toilets, cafés and shops are easy to find nearby, making this one of the more convenient coastal walks on the South Devon coast.
